A mechanic gives you the solution to the most common noise you hear every morning when you start your car: "It's very annoying, but it's easy to fix."

Have you ever heard the sound of chains as soon as you start your car in the morning? This is what Juan José, a mechanic at Talleres Ebenezer , talks about in one of his latest videos. He has a TikTok account with over 263,000 followers.

The sound in question comes from the timing chain , but after a few minutes it disappears: "It's because it's building up oil pressure," says the expert, who explains that "The chain is kept taut by a tensioner. This tensioner pushes a shoe, and this shoe tightens the chain. What happens? The tensioner loses oil pressure , and until it builds up oil pressure, it doesn't keep the chain taut."

So, once filled with oil, the tensioner pushes the timing chain until it's taut, and the noise disappears. As one TikTok user comments on the video, "You just replace the tensioner and that's it in 99% of cases." This ensures that the tensioner's internal spring activates as quickly as possible, and we stop hearing that annoying rattling sound every morning. It's not an expensive repair and will eliminate future problems .

However, that annoying noise could indicate another, more serious problem. And this one is more difficult to solve. If it's not coming from the tensioner, but from the belt, the repair is a major one : "It can happen that the belts and chains end up stretching. They become increasingly worse, of lower quality, completely rubbish. They start to stretch, stretch, stretch... Until they reach a point where even when the car is started, it won't tighten. The tensioner isn't able to compensate for the chain's stretching," the mechanic points out. The only solution is to replace the entire timing belt to restore that lost firmness. And, as you might have guessed, it's not cheap.

So if you hear that noise constantly and it doesn't go away no matter how much the car warms up, we're sorry but you'll probably have to loosen your wallet, especially if you don't want a breakdown that ends up with your car in the scrapyard .
